I have my parents to thank (in part) for my love of travel. Living in the parental home while going to university was challenging for all involved and many a heated argument ensued.
From my 18-year old’s perspective I felt denied the freedom of other students not (so immediately) answerable for their lifestyle. For my parents, my abrupt transition from a uniformed convent school girl into a third level student more focused on partying than studying was difficult.
I determined to remove myself from the tyranny of curfews and early morning calls and break away and see the world.
And so, with that initial bid for freedom, I began my lifelong love affair with travel. I have lived and worked in Spain, France, America and London. I’ve travelled extensively in Europe, South and Central America, Australia and Asia.
Travel, then as now, has always represented a universe of possibility for me.
The external journey stimulates an internal voyage of self-discovery; thoughts and experiences came to pass that fundamentally changed my life perspective and shaped my life.
As I explored the unknown, I discovered my own resourcefulness to find work, a roof over my head and new friends; resilience to ride out the more difficult aspects of travelling and the ability to communicate, understand and be understood even when we spoke different languages.
And, as I connected with people from varying cultures, I came face to face with many of my own assumptions and beliefs of how life should be.
I opened my mind to how differently people choose to see the world and the resulting outcomes in their lives. It sparked in me an ongoing fascination with what makes people tick and how can people create the lives they want. And my own attitudes and behaviour became more flexible when back at home!
Now, I work full time in learning and development. Using tools such as coaching, NLP, MBTI I work with clients to access and develop their own internal resources (to improve their work performance/ leverage their potential in the workplace) and support them as they journey towards creating their own world of possibility.
