Problem Framework/Outcomes Framework

Given the seemingly relentless coverage of global economic downturn and the very real challenges of recession, downsizing and, in some instances, job loss it’s easy to lose our sense of perspective and self-worth. Even when we’re one of the “lucky ones” remaining in work as colleagues leave we too have to contend with the challenges of trying to remaining productive, resourceful and adding value to our organisations as the bad news around us seems to escalate. Change is being forced upon us at an alarming rate and, at times, it seems like we have lost control and are merely reacting to external events. The Problem/Outcome Framework below is a useful model to help us stay as resourceful as possible when dealing with challenges.

Outcome Framework

What is your problem?

What do you want?

How long have you had it?

How will you know when you have got it?

Whose fault is it?

What else in your life will improve when you get it?

Who is to blame?

What resources do you already have which can help you achieve this outcome?

What is your worst experience with the problem?

What is something similar which you did succeed in doing?

Why haven’t you solved it yet?

What is the next step?

More than ever it’s essential to remember that while we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can certainly choose how we react to it.
