Infectious: Stay Away is the tag line for this innovative exhibition now showing in The Science Gallery, TCD. Ignore the health warning, it’s fantastic-Go!
Opened since 17th April, 14,000 people have already visited the “containment zone” on Pearse Street.

This exhibition, through an intriguing combination of science and art, explores contagious diseases and strategies for containment. It’s highly interactive; on entering, you’re greeted by exhibition assistants wearing contamination suits and you’re equipped with an electronic tag to monitor your state of infection.
There’s a live epidemic simulation which vividly illustrates how modern travel spreads strains of ‘flu across the globe. If you do get infected?  Head straight to the disinfection station!

My favourite exhibits?

  • Contagious Creativity: This art meets science experiment by Allo Allik, Annika Koski and Simon Jermyn brings together sound, illustration and cellular automata to create a mutating artwork.
  • Kiss Culture: In this exhibit, by Maria Phelan, members of the public are invited to kiss an agar plate to leave an imprint of their lips. The plates are first incubated to grow the bacteria (present on lips) and then displayed on a grid system in the gallery.

And, not everyone’s cup of tea, but you can get your sample made into a coaster to take home!

This free exhibition runs ‘til 17th July; further information available on www.sciencegallery.com
