TED came to Dublin last Friday 12th June.
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It began in 1984, as a conference bringing together people, from those three worlds, with a passionate belief in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately the world. Since then, it has achieved global renown for its inspirational talks from individuals with unique knowledge and ideas to share with the world. More than a thousand people attend the annual U.S. TED conference with content now extended to include science, science, business, the arts and the global issues facing our world. Over 400 talks are available online including Al Gore, Tracy Chapman and Elizabeth Gilbert.
With the TEDx series of independent spin-off events, the same spirit of spreading exciting and inspirational ideas continues. The Science Gallery was the venue for Friday’s TEDx talk and only the fourth such event in Europe so far. Free tickets were gone almost immediately.
In total, about 100 people attended the event comprising three speakers and two video talks. See below for a brief overview:
1. Dr Scott Rickard started with a demo of DUET, his sound separation system. He took a John Coltrane track and separated out the various musical elements (sax, drums, piano and bass).
2. The first video talk was the demo of the Sixth Sense by Pattie Maes from the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT Media Lab.
3. Mark Billinghurst in his talk “Bringing AR to the Masses” gave an overview of the background, relevance, and future applicability of Accessible Augmented Reality.
4. The second video talk was Robert Full talking about Biomutualism – where evolution can teach engineers and vice versa.
5. The final speaker of the night was Blaise Aguera y Arcas [Photosynth demo from TED 2007] talking about recent developments; his talk was entitled “Cyberspace arriving – Using computer vision to reconstruct and connect the world”.
