A really interesting TED talk by Tim Brown of Ideo in which he links the importance of playfulness to ensure creativity and particularly in the world of design
Some of the main points included:
• The importance of creating a trusted environment where people feel secure and free to try out new ideas. He gives examples of creative workplaces specifically designed to help people feel relaxed with reminders for people to be playful e.g. Pixar where animar animators work in wooden huts and decorated caves
• Encouraging playfulness is pragmatic-for IDEO consultants it helps them achieve better creative solutions; part of this stems from being more open to possibilities rather than categorising everything immediately.
• And, ironically, the importance of having ground-rules for creativity; the explanation is that rules are essential to break away from “the way we’ve always done things around here”
• The importance of “thinking with your hands” or building prototypes
• Role play to try out new behaviour and project yourself into the experience
• Moving between divergence and convergence
And finally you can be serious and playful too!
