The Blue Monday mathematical formula was created by Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University. It marked a symbolic date in January when people are suffering due to the piling up of a combination of negative effects.

The components of the Blue Monday formula are: weather (W), debt level (the difference between debt accumulated and our ability to pay)(D-d), time since Christmas (T), time since failing our New Year’s resolutions (Q), low motivational levels (M) and the feeling of a need to take action (Na).

This calculates that today, Monday 18 January 2010, is the worst day of the year: Christmas is a distant memory, motivation to keep resolutions is low, the weather is awful, bill payments are due. While this formula has come in for some derision it’s probably fair to say that mid-January can be a difficult time. Which is why you really should take a few minutes to watch the eight irresistible principles of fun-a great video from Box of Crayons;  it reinforces the link between having fun and being more creative.
