Jeff Bezos talks about how he took the plunge to leave his job and start Amazon.com; he made his decision using what he refers to as the Regret Mininimizatin Framework. If he was to imagine himself at the age of 80 he wanted to minimize the number of regrets that he had. It became very clear to him that he would never regret having tried to build an online business even if it failed. He realised that what he would undoubtedly regret “is not having ever tried“and this made the decision to leave his job and take the risk much easier.
This theory resonates for me-yes, it’s important to spend time researching, planning and figuring out your strengths. However, I agree with Dan Pink and what he says in Drive:The surprising truth about what motivates us -real intrinsic motivation comes from being able to do work and contribute in ways that allow us to learn and create new things and improve ourselves and the world we live in. And the knock on effect of this? No regrets!
